Human guinea pig... uh I mean test subject

Heh :P

Yes, I've finally done it - I'm going to a medical screening for a study on the effects of a generic anxiety medicine on human subjects and honestly speaking, I'm very nervous.

But, well, I need the money and, in the meantime, I really should go find a tuition job during the weekends. As bleak as my future would look right now, I'm going to get through the muck I'm in right now and hopefully, when I've gotten enough money saved up, my future won't look that bad... and yes, unfortunately, in this life and with this kind of society, money is almost everything. Sigh.

Anyways, if anyone else is interested here's the link to their facebook page. They pay you pretty well for the work and provides a free medical screening. They are interested in getting guys mainly but ladies are also welcome. If you need some cash and have plenty of free time during the weekends, feel free to drop by their facebook page to get more info. One of my best friend works there and I trust she would warn me if the studies are too dangerous, but from her experience, it's quite fine - there are a few minor cases of vomiting, nausea, dizziness, headache and fatigue but that pretty much sums it up.

Update!!!

I've went to the medical screening and boy, am I nervous! lol Anyway, now that I've learned more about what the company Info Kinetics does, I'm more at ease of going through with this 'human guinea pig' thingy. I'll give a general description of what they do there and perhaps you may be interested to join :) Only for Penangnites (Island) only though, unless you don't mind the travelling fees lol.

So basically what this company does is that it performs a bio equivalence study for medicines - to compare between generic drugs (copycat drugs) and the original, patented and branded drug. Confused? Well, let me give you an example:

You know about Panadol and paracetamol right? Okay so, this Panadol company used a sht-load of money to research and develop the drug and named it Panadol. The company patented the drug and the patent will last for 10-15 years. However, once the patent expires, other pharmaceutical companies can just copy their protocols (or SOP) to make that drug to sell. Logically, the drug made from the Panadol company and the other companies should be the same since they both uses the same materials and methods to make the drug.

However, there's no definite way to know whether they are similar or not... or is there? Yes, there is! By doing bio equivalence study, we can know whether these two drugs works the same way or have the same side effects (Note that if the original drug has several known side effects, then the copycat version of it should, logically, have the same side effects). But for this bio equivalence study to work, they need human volunteers... you!

By joining up and helping to test the drug, you are helping poorer people by introducing working and cheaper drugs into the market! Wait, what? Yes, you didn't hear wrongly! This is because these other companies which produced the copycat drug don't need to go through all the costly hassle with researching and developing the drug in the first place - so in other words, they can produce the copycat drugs at a way cheaper price than the branded version of it. This greatly helps poorer people, who constantly need the medicine (especially those medicines that some people may need to take for the rest of their lives), to afford the medicines they need without severely damaging their standard of living.

Taking paracetamol for example, you can buy the branded version of paracetamol, Panadol, for perhaps RM 5 per pack of 8 but you can buy the copycat version (but works exactly the same way as Panadol) for RM 5 for a whole bottle of 25 pills.

Paracetamol isn't a very costly drug but consider this... what about those high blood pressure medicine? High cholesterol medicine? Those are rather costly (around RM 1++ per pill) and may be a huge burden to poor people. By joining in these studies, you can help make cheaper yet effective drugs a reality for the poorer people. Who knows, it may be beneficial to you in the future as well!

You may be scared to volunteer, but from what I've learned, they offer a pretty nice package deal for you which includes compensation for your volunteering time, compensation if you required treatment for any severe side effects after taking the drug and followed their instructions to the letter (which so far never happens - unless you are allergic to the drug and didn't know about it), you just need to take 1 pill per study period (2 study periods per month), you are only allowed to join 1 study per month (in order for your blood to rejuvenate itself and ofc, for the drug to be remove from your system - which actually just takes a week plus).

There are also several plus point that I gave them, for example,

  • Paying you with cheque right after the last follow-up session for that study that you've joined. No hassle of money being not banked in to your account.
  • You practically go there, relax and do your own stuff while allowing nurses, at intervals of an hour or more, to take your blood.
  • They have a great game room and wards.
  • Great staff service - if you have any inquires, they will be able to give you an answer.
  • You get to choose which study you want to join. Although there are some studies that request only male/ only female volunteers.
  • A rather cool referral system - whereby you collect points and cash whenever you recruited a new friend into the program.
  • Free medical screening.

So yeah, you get to help the society while getting yourself some money at the side... how cool is that?! :D

P/S: If you decided to join up, do mention my name: Toh Saw Yi as your referral ;) and you'll get some extra benefits as well! Who knows? We might see each other there :)
